For generations, the Fernandez family has been crafting this extraordinary elixir in the face of adversity, their secret mobile distillery evading the watchful eyes of the authorities. In the dead of night, they would travel from village to village, distilling the essence of the Sierra Madre into every precious drop. Even when the army sought to put an end to their craft, the Fernandez family persevered, using bullet fragments to mend their shot-riddled still, a symbol of their unbreakable spirit. Today, we invite you to raise a glass to their unwavering dedication and savor the fruits of their labor.
Unlike its cousin, the agave, Sotol is crafted from the Dasylirion Wheeleri, a flowering plant that belongs to the Asparagus family. This unassuming desert dweller, with its slender leaves and towering flower stalks, holds within it the secret to Sotol’s unique flavor profile. Our skilled distillers coax out the plant’s hidden potential, creating a spirit that is as surprising as it is enchanting.
At the helm of Sotol production is Bienvenido Fernandez, the torchbearer in a long line of master distillers. Bienvenido, a fourth-generation Sotolero, learned the trade secrets from his father and grandfather, who operated a clandestine mobile distillery during the dark days of prohibition. With over 40 years of experience, Bienvenido’s expertise is unmatched, and his passion evident in every sip of this exquisite spirit, ensuring that the art of Sotol-making will endure for generations to come.
High in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains, 6,500 feet above sea level, lies the town of Madera, the birthplace of our exceptional Sotol.
